About Ouchi Gallery

Ouchi Gallery

No, not "ouch". Pronounced OOH-WOO-CH-I, Ouchi is Japanese for "home" or "house". Our gallery has this name because it displays works by contemporary Japanese artists in a home-like setting.

Art should be more than a business commodity. It should transform all of our daily lives, awakening new thoughts and passions each day. The best art teaches that there are no limits to individual pursuits; that our own possibilities are infinite.

So when you visit Ouchi Gallery, we hope that you feel both at home and inspired. Perhaps you will feel something exhilarating—a positive "ouch!"

About min-gei

"min-gei" is a regeneration of the Japanese folk art movement called "Mingei" which developed in the late 1920s. The theory of Mingei was to discover and appreciate beauty in everyday objects created by nameless craftsmen. Ordinary utilitarian objects were never considered as art until this movement.

"min-gei" restores the movement in present time with a new theory: making art a part of our every day life. Instead of considering art as something special and intangible, art should be familiar and intimate with us and our lives, just like our every day objects.

Join the movement and share "min (everyone's) - gei (art)" with the world.Let everyone have art in their life.

The theme of Ouchi Gallery is "Small change = big difference."

Our goal is to change the world through art. It might sound difficult... but imagine what would happen if you spread an idea to a person next to you, and that person spread it to another person, and so on and so forth.

It's that simple.

Pass the idea on. Together we CAN change the world.
